We believe one of the highlights of any holiday in France in the quality and variety of the food and drink on offer whether you dine out or in.

Restaurants & Bars

Montmorillon offers a great choice of bars and restaurants.

Le Lucullus

Lucullus

This is the premier gastronomy restaurant in town, owned by M and Mme Alloyeau, and has a far-reaching reputation for fantastic food. It’s in the Hotel de France and offers a range of three course menus including a Menu Gastronomic. The restaurant is elegant, the service exceptional and the wine list well chosen and reasonably priced. Closed Sunday evening and Mondays.

The hotel also has a Bistro which offers exceptional value. The menu is a little simpler but it’s from the same kitchen!! Closed Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime so staff can concentrate on the main restaurant.

Au Roman des Saveurs

Chef patron Franck Faviez and his team will ensure you have a memorable meal at this fine restaurant, beautifully situated on the banks of the river by the old bridge in what was once the ancient town’s prison. There are a number of well-priced set menus to choose from as well as a la carte. Closed Sunday evening only.

Crêperie du Brouard

Dining Al Fresco Creperie

Across the road from Au Roman des Saveurs and, therefore enjoying a similar great setting, especially if you choose to dine al fresco, is the Crêperie. Simple, inexpensive tasty meals which can be accompanied by Breton cider. Dishes are named after famous people. My favourite, although you have to be very hungry, is the "Tom Cruise". Closed Mondays.

Nota Bene

Nota Bene

Nota Bene is a lovely pizza/grill in the small square at the end of Rue Champien. Fabulous food at very reasonably prices - dine in or out plus take-away.

La Terrasse

La Terrace Terrasse

La Terrasse, close to the Medieval Vieux Pont bridge, in the centre of Montmorillon, was opened in March 2005 by Londoner Kim Stupple after a year long restoration and renovation project.

This delightful tea rooms and bar is so named because of the lovely terrace at the rear which overlooks the river Gartempe – the perfect hideaway and a delightful spot to while away some time enjoying Kim’s home baking and extensive selection of speciality teas. Wine and bottled beers are also available.

Kim, a former Playboy “bunny”, and cruise liner casino manager bought La Terrace on an “impulse” after a brief visit to Montmorillon in 2004.

Thé Gallery

As well as serving delicious teas, cakes and scones, not to mention breakfasts, and lunchtime Cornish Pasties made by local British pork butcher, Oliver , Thé Gallery owner Mary Cooper, hosts exhibitions of talented local artists work. The tea rooms are situated just off the main road through Montmorillon, boulevard de Strasbourg, behind the Credit Mutual bank.

Mary is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 7pm and weekends from mid-day to 7pm.

Le Bistro de Caro

Probably the best quality and value lunches in town if you have a big appetite or plan only a snack in the evening. Le Bistro de Caro is a great choice and extremely popular so try to get there for about noon. You'll find this little gem in Place Georges Pironnet. Take the road which runs up the hill behind the Hotel de France until you reach a little square, you'll see the restaurant there.

Le Minaret

Minaret Minaret

In the small precinct opposite Hyper U this Moroccan restaurant is excellent. Owned and operated for 18 years by M and Mme Kadraoui, it offers a range of dishes including couscous, tajines, moroccan soups and wonderful pastries. it is closed Sunday evening, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Le Cafeteria Saint Nicolas

Across the road from Le Minaret, this restaurant is only open at lunchtime, is closed on Saturday and for two weeks during August. It is a great spot and very popular with locals looking for a substantial, inexpensive lunchtime meal. The set menu offers a buffet of cold starters, a choice of main course and selection of desserts.

Au bonheur d’Asie

Au bonheur

Montmorillon’s popular Chinese restaurant can be found by following the main street towards La Trimouille/Le Blanc. Strange to eat Chinese in France? Well “Yes” but it is really very good. It was opened six years ago by M le Mach and was, then, the first Asian restaurant in the area. It serves a wide selection of Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese dishes. Ones to look out for are the Fondues. Open for lunch and dinner every day except Monday.

Le Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo

Le Victor Hugo at the end of the main street, on the corner of Avenue Victor Hugo (of course) is a real treat and should certainly be on your list to visit while you are here.

Owned by Paulo and Caroline De Matos (he is Portuguese and she is French) it has been a bar/restaurant since the early 1900s. The De Matos have run it since 1998.

The restaurant is open week days for really good value, hearty three course lunches and for an a la carte Sunday lunch. The wine list is excellent. Also available in the evening for party bookings. We enjoyed a fabulous New Year's Eve here in 2005.

Pizza Bella

This cheerful little takeaway is in the main town square. You can eat there at the pavement tables or bring your choice back to the house.

Bars

Nightlife in Montmorillon centres around the many bars in the town which routinely host live music and entertainment thorough the summer months.

A good many also offer cheap and cheerful lunchtime fare and all provide the facility which for us is such a part of being in France – outdoor tables where you can sip a coffee and cognac and watch the world go by!

Bar Brasserie du Marché

bar

This friendly bar is run by Mademoiselle Iftikhar Chazia. Although predominantly a place to sip a drink and watch the world go by, a few pakistanais specialties are available if you ask in advance. It is open seven days a week from 8.30am to 2.30am - one of the latest open in the town which makes it popular with the youngsters.

Le Commerce

Around the corner from the Hotel de France on place de la Republique, Le Commerce is open evenings only. Food is good value and served with enthusiasm. The fricassees are especially nice.

Bar Palais

Palais

More of a true locals “bar” but also serves lunchtime snacks. There is a games room at the rear.Great place to sit and while away some time while you watch the comings and goings in the main square.

Le Pont de Bois

A cheerful little bar and a great spot to sit and watch the world go by. Service is quick and the food is good value especially if you go for the daily “special”.

Le Buvard

Buvard
Montmorillon’s party pub, Le Buvard which is actually built into the Notre Dame crypt can be extremely busy. Live music is common-place and it serves a mean Beamish Ale! Popular, more pub-like than the others serves quick snacks at lunchtime.

De la Trappe aux Livres

The library bar, so called because of its wide selection of books, not that anyone seems intent on reading any. This little bar is renowned for the vast choice of beers on offer, including the famous Belgian “Quack” beer. It’s highly recommended. Serves sandwiches and snacks.Click here

Le Grimoire

Le Grimoire

A great favourite of ours, just along the road from the house, Le Grimoire is owned and run by Thierry and Céline who always offer a cheery welcome.

A traditional bar, tabac and confectioners, it is open from 6.30am ( for petit déjeuner a la Francaise on the terrace) until 8pm. Good quality lunches and snacks are served, especially a delicious Carbonade Flamade ( beef stew with beer and onions from the North of France where Thierry and Céline come from). The grill is also open every Friday evening for excellent steaks, beef sausages and brochettes.

Every month they organise a special soirée either around a particular food - paella, barbeque etc or activity which can range from Lotto or Concours de Belote (cards) to musical events and dancing.

Restaurants Out of Town

Azat-le-Ris

La Vieille Ferme

This super restaurant, over looking the fishing lake, was opened two years ago by Australian, Michael O'Sullivan and his wife Christiane, who is German. She cooks while he serves and the food, atmosphere and the setting are well worth the journey from Montmorillon.

The couple are passionate about using only the very best seasonal ingredients which are cooked with immense flair in a style which they describe as "French cuisine with a twist". The wine list is exemplary and the cheese board would be a credit to any Michelin restaurant.

The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday (€21) and for Sunday lunch (€25). On the fourth Thursday evening of each month there are very popular themed International Evenings. Booking is essential. Tel 05 55 60 23 90.

To get there from Montmorillon take the D54 to Lathus, turn left in Lathus, just after the Mairie and signposted Azat-le-Ris. There is a T junction as you arrive at the village, turn left and you will find the restaurant just on the right. The journey takes c 20mins.

Lathus

La Voulzie is on the banks of the Vienne is a lovely setting. We have actually sat and watched kingfishers while dining! The food is excellent and very varied. A brilliant place for Sunday lunch - look out for the smoked Carp specialty. Booking is essential and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, closed Monday and Tuesday and during January. Tel: 05 49 91 72 71

.
It can be difficult to find. From the centre of Lathus you turn right (if coming from Montmorillon) at the main crossroads opposite the church. The road takes you towards the river Gartempe. There are signs to the restaurant as you approach the bridge.

Next door is the renowned water sports Centre de Plein Air, and there is also a free river bathing beach.

St Savin

The area's only Michelin-starred restaurant is that of Christophe Cadieu in St Savin.

With menues to die for from €40 in an exquiste setting, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, closed Sunday evening, Monday and Wednesday evening.
