La Cité de L’Écrit et des Métiers du Livre
The restored Mediaeval quarter of Montmorillon is dedicated to all aspects of books and writers. There are some eight similar towns in Europe, including Hay-on-Wye in Wales and Wigtown in Scotland. You will find eight bookshops clustered in the area selling a mix of new, old and antiquarian books, as well as a book-binders and paper-maker.
Every two years the town hosts the grand Salon du Livre (2008 is next) when authors gather to present and discuss their works.
Photos - Copy write: La Nouvelle Republic (NR Multimedia) At the ninth Salon du Livre in 2006 there were 80 visting authors. Essentially a French affair featuring writers who might be unfamiliar to UK visitors, the event is, nevertheless well worth a visit. During 2006, Maison Calla played host to New York poet, Ann McGovern who, along with our dear friend, poet Christopher Hampton, gave a recital at the little theatre in the cite.
